Independence Day was first celebrated with festivities, including cannon shots, music, fireworks, and parades in Philadelphia in on July 4, 1777. In 1941, Congress declared July 4 a federal legal holiday. Today, families and friends gather together to celebrate, usually with an outdoor picnic or barbecue. Cities are adorned with bright red, white and blue banners, ribbons and flags. Parades and public gatherings are often held during the day, and nearly all towns have a public display of fireworks at night. The 4th of July is a time of patriotism and since September 11, 2001, when terrorists flew into the Twin Towers in New York City, patriotism has been at an all-time high.
