The Mardi Gras Indians are not Indians, but are African Americans celebrating their heritage. During the days of slavery, Native Americans gave blacks refuge and accepted slaves into their society. The Mardi Gras Indians pay their respects to the native Indians by wearing similar costumes during Mardi Gras.
The Mardi Gras Indians consist of several "tribes" that march around the streets, making music, dancing and following the chiefs. When one tribe encounters another, a competition of song, dance and costumes often take place.
